Terms of Membership
Members are expected to contribute to the support and maintenance of the LP2 community primarily by acting as a study group coordinator or co-coordinator. In addition, members are encouraged to serve on a committee, or become actively involved in other programs and services. Our members are also expected to support and practice the principles in our Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. For detailed information consult the LP2 Member Handbook.
Members are expected to register each semester for at least two study groups. Members who have special circumstances that require a reduction in the number of study groups should consult with the Director.
Each semester, all members must either be registered or on an approved leave of absence for no more than two semesters to retain their membership status. Maintaining membership status requires the member to enroll in at least two LP2 study groups each semester, unless given explicit permission from the Director.
Members are expected to contribute to the support and maintenance of the LP2 community primarily by acting as a study group coordinator or co-coordinator. In addition, members are encouraged to serve on a committee, or become actively involved in other programs and services.
In consideration of the purposes of LP2 and the requirements of membership, a review of new members may take place after a period of no less than three years. Subsequently, future reviews may be requested by the Director. Procedures for review and recommendation for renewal shall be determined by the Director.
Members may decide to make payment annually or per semester. Current fees can be found on the CUNY Graduate Center LP2 website. The fee entitles members to register for up to 3 study groups per semester, to participate in other LP2 and Graduate Center activities, to use CUNY Graduate Center facilities, and use its research library.
Registration information is emailed to members prior to the start of each semester. It is expected that all registrations will be completed by the end of the registration period. Registration is completed online. Members rank their preferences and note how many study groups they would like to enroll in.
The Office of Academic Initiatives and Strategic Innovation develops each member’s schedule. When there are more prioritized requests for a study group than can be accommodated, a lottery system is used to select members to be registered in that study group. Because of the popularity of film study groups, members may be limited to one film-based study group.
A member must take a minimum of two study groups unless granted special exception by the Director. Similarly, a member must be granted Director permission to add a fourth study group. Coordinators should take part in at least two study groups — the one they are coordinating plus one other. They may take a maximum of four study groups, including their own.
There are drop/add periods at the start of each semester. Detailed registration information is provided to all members via the The Observer and in Upcoming News and Events.
Members can request changes in their study group enrollment during two periods: there is an initial two-week add/drop period after member schedules are first released during the previous semester. A second three-week add/drop period opens one week prior to the first day of the semester and closes after the second week of study groups meetings. After the second session of a given study group, there are no changes made to rosters and schedules outside of emergencies or withdrawals.
All add/drop requests should be directed to lp2@gc.cuny.edu, not to the study group coordinators. Graduate Center staff will make the requested changes (to the extent they are possible) to the individual’s schedule and to the study group roster. All registration changes will be communicated by the office to the relevant coordinators.
All refund requests must be made in writing or by e-mail to lp2@gc.cuny.edu (not by telephone or through the study group coordinator).
Refunds are computed from the date that written notice is received, and only made by institutional check to or to the credit card of the payor of record. There are no cash refunds. Costs other than the membership fee, including course materials or processing fees, are non-refundable.
Annual membership fees will be prorated in increments of one term if notice is given of withdrawal from the program according to the below schedule.
• 100% membership fee refund will be issued if the notice of withdrawal is received at least two business days before the first class session.
• 50% membership fee refund will be issued if the notice of withdrawal is received at least one business day before the second class session.
• After the second class session, no refunds or “credits” will be granted.
A member can take up to a full year leave of absence (two consecutive terms, not inclusive of summer). If a member is on leave beyond a year, that member must consult with the Director. LP2 members requesting a leave of absence may do so by emailing the Director at mvillere@gc.cuny.edu. All approvals and denials are made at the Director’s discretion as is readmission following a leave of absence. Under most circumstances, one-semester leaves of absence are granted to LP2 members in good standing.
Getting Involved
Beyond the Classroom summarizes all the ways that members get acquainted. Get Involved will give you an overview of the ways to contribute to LP2 activities. Check out the Committees and their missions and the Special interest Groups and their activities to learn more. If you would like further information on how to get involved, reach out to the Director at lp2@gc.cuny.edu who can match you with a member.
Attend the Women’s or Men’s Groups or other small group activities that appear in Upcoming Events and News. Reach out to your mentor if you are a new member. Use the Member Directory to find members who live near you or share interests and reach out to them directly. Plan and organize an extracurricular activity.
Submit your idea using the Suggestion Box form which goes to LP2 leadership.
Attend the Director’ bi-weekly open office meeting (See Calendar for the schedule) or write to her directly at lp2@gc.cuny.edu.

If you anticipate missing a Study Group meeting, please notify the coordinator(s) in advance, when possible. Coordinators track missed sessions as a way of looking out for members of our community. After a series of consecutive class absences, coordinators will reach out to the member, an emergency contact, and the Director.
Coordinating a Study Group
Coordinators should take part in at least two study groups — the one they are coordinating plus one other. They may take a maximum of four study groups, including their own.
This is a 2 step process at present.
Go to the Study Group History Table. There you can find basic information on any study group back to the Summer of 2014. Search by Category, Study Group Name, Coordinator(s) Name(s), Course Year and Semester.
To find a particular Study Group syllabus: Take note of the semester and year it was given and then use the Study Group Grid Archive, which is organized by semester to find that study group. The Study Group name in a grid links to its syllabus.
The Library and Online Research page describes and provides links to numerous libraries with amazing online tools, other important online resources, and the best used book source online to assist members with research into scholarly articles, images, books, databases and other materials.
